Building a Lasting Legacy for SNAME and the Maritime Industry

By Richard Mueller for SNAME’s April Newsletter 2025 [summary]

Recent years have brought positive steps in growth and engagement for SNAME. However, the article stresses that the real challenge lies in sustaining this momentum over generations. Short-term achievements matter little if they aren’t converted into long-term structures and initiatives. Building a legacy demands a clear, strategic focus on continuity and purpose.

Leadership succession is highlighted as a critical element. The article encourages every member—from students to senior professionals—to participate in leadership development, mentoring, and committees. SNAME offers multiple ways for members to get involved and prepare future leaders, from joining executive sections to serving on technical panels.

The Central Role of Mentorship

A central theme is that mentorship is essential to a lasting legacy. Veteran SNAME members are encouraged to help guide and inspire the next generation not just through technical training, but by fostering a sense of purpose and community. The Society’s new mentorship program, launched by the Young Professionals Committee, is an example of this commitment, with initial partnerships underway and plans to expand.

With the maritime sector evolving rapidly due to decarbonization, automation, and digitalization, SNAME must do more than keep up with changes. To stay relevant, it aims to lead industry innovation and set the pace for where maritime technology is heading.

Legacy is a collective endeavor. The article calls on all SNAME members to ask themselves how they can contribute, whether by mentoring, leading committees, supporting research, or encouraging new participation—from taking on leadership roles to funding future scholarships. Three members have recently pledged new scholarships, demonstrating one meaningful way to extend SNAME’s legacy.
