From Strategy to Action: The Maritime Action Plan Is Here

NETSCo CEO and SNAME President (2025–2026) Richard Mueller’s latest message in the SNAME monthly newsletter captures a sentiment many maritime professionals have been feeling: we’ve had plenty of talk—now it’s time for action.

For months, industry conversations have circled around strategy, policy, and long-term ambition. But progress has felt slow. That changed with the release of the U.S. Maritime Action Plan (MAP), which offers a coordinated national framework to strengthen shipbuilding, workforce development, infrastructure, and maritime competitiveness.

In the article, Mueller draws a clear parallel: downloading the MAP is like advancing the throttles—but getting underway requires preparation, coordination, and engagement. The plan is our chart. The real work begins with how we interpret it, apply it locally, and engage collectively.

He challenges SNAME members—and the broader maritime community—to take three practical steps:

  • Read the plan deliberately.
  • Translate it into action within your company and region.
  • Engage through SNAME’s Sections, Committees, and Panels to help turn policy into engineering reality.

The opportunity is here. The direction is clearer. Now it’s time for action.
