Bring It On: Marine Engineers Face Challenges to Equip Shipowners with Low-carbon Fuel Options

Ammonia may be the best solution available at this time.

Great Lakes Seaway Review coverRich Mueller, CEO/President of NETSCo explains the challenge marine engineers face to equip shipowners with low-carbon fuel options in a two-part article series in the Great Lakes / Seaway Review.

Mueller opinions that, “to make real progress and long-term environmental progress, a substantially different approach other than hydrocarbon-based fuels will be required.”

He explains further that one approach, ammonia, is getting a lot of attention from scientists, environmentalists, shipowners and engine makers. The benefits of ammonia are clear, “it does not emit carbon dioxide when it is burned, is quite abundant and is widely available, with a century of infrastructure already in place in North America.”
